Caribbean STAY

A TASTE OF THE MEDITERRANEAN

Sun Ra is one of those places in life where once you go, you wonder why you didn’t try it before. From the road side the exterior is an unassuming Caribbean wooden house set in a pretty garden lit up by dancing lights in the trees. You head through the wooden gate, and as you round the corner onto the gallery your senses are sent into overload: from the aromas of fresh cooked food from the kitchen; the warm and calming effect created by the lighting; the stunning views of the harbour on which the restaurant is located, to the warm welcome of owners Betty and Mirko, and then of course there is the sound of jazz and new world music that forms the cool, chilled out backdrop to your evening.

Named after the talented jazz pianist who was so crazy he truly believed he was from another planet, Sun Ra Restaurant, is far from crazy but it is a vibrant place to hang out with a definite European atmosphere. Sun Ra was in fact a great friend of portrait photographer Mirko Boscolo half of the husband and wife couple who own Sun Ra, and the jazz lover in the family, and whose photographs of Sun Ra were the inspiration for the simple, contemporary style of the restaurant. A perfect melding of jazz, art and culture and superb dining.

This restaurant really is simple, in its menu, food, wines and attitude. The Mediterranean influence on the menu is clear, what is not at first obvious, is that every single thing listed is made from scratch fresh including the bread, daily. As Betty describes that evenings options to you, it does become clear that the menu changes daily to accommodate local fresh ingredients, such as Wahoo Carpaccio, Momofuku's marinated steak (Asian style marinade), Mahi Mahi rice roll, and fresh home made Tagliatelle to name just a few of their delicious dishes.

The dining experience is casual and laid back but the service is fast and first class. A mixture of wines from both old and new worlds which complement the foods perfectly are sold by the glass or bottle along with fresh juices and harmoniously mixed drinks. And of course excellent Italian coffee!

A dinghy dock leads right next to the restaurant patio making it perfect for persons staying on board at the Antigua Yacht Club Marina, Falmouth Harbour Marina and the Catamaran Marina.

Betty and Mirko welcome everybody with a huge smile, you have the feeling you are being welcomed into their own home. This restaurant is one of those perfect little finds you will keep coming back to.
