The Grenada Co-operative Nutmeg Association (G.C.N.A) was founded on March 27th, 1947 by farmers for farmers. It is a co-operative formed to safeguard and promote the interest of the nutmeg industry and to help farmers develop and market their products. Presently, the GCNA has an active membership of approximately 3,375 farmers. Prior to the devastation caused by Hurricane Ivan of 2004, the membership was more than 7,000 farmers.

The G.C.N.A. currently employs more than 150 persons, making it one of the largest employers on the island. Before the hurricane of 2004 the Association employed a staff in excess of 500 persons. The Association’s Head Office is located at Kirani James Boulevard, P.O. Box 160, St. George’s, Grenada.

The Nutmeg industry contributes significantly to the island’s economy. For example, in 1999, almost 50% of the total exports of Grenada were attributed to the export of nutmeg and mace. Although this figure has decreased since hurricane Ivan in 2004, contributions of 10% as seen in 2010 and 12% in 2011 still ranks the G.C.N.A as one of the island’s economic pillars.
