The University Council of Jamaica was established by an Act of Parliament in 1987 as the national quality assurance body for tertiary education to ensure quality through the adoption and improvement of educational standards. The UCJ is a statutory body currently under the portfolio of the Minister of Education.

On August 1, 2012, Churches Co-operative Credit Union and GSB Co-operative Credit Union merged to form the new entity First Heritage Co-operative Credit Union Limited (FHC). This decision culminated the process of discussions that began in October 2010 when the idea of the amalgamation of the two Credit Unions was born.

With a combined heritage of over 100 years, First Heritage Co-operative Credit Union Limited now stands as the largest open bond Credit Union in Jamaica. A merger of this magnitude was the first of its kind in the history of the Credit Union movement.


The Bureau of Standards Jamaica is a statutory body established by The Standards Act of 1969 to promote and encourage standardization in relation to commodities, processes and practices. However, over the years, its role has expanded to include the provision of services in relation to conformity assessment (certification, inspection and testing, and calibration) and metrology.


The Jamaica National Heritage Trust (JNHT) is the agency responsible for regulating all archaeological research in Jamaica. This includes public archaeology projects, salvage/rescue archaeology, archaeological impact assessments and research on major development projects. The Archaeology Division at the JNHT practices collection management of artifacts and conservation to stabilize and extend the life of the artifacts. It also maintains a National Inventory of Historical and Archaeological Sites. The JNHT now has a complement of 8 archaeologists and cultural resource managers.


 

The Broadcasting Commission of Jamaica is the regulatory body with responsibility for radio, television and cable services in Jamaica.
To carry out the provisions of the Broadcasting and Radio Re-Diffusion Act;
To make and administer the Television and Sound Broadcasting Regulations;
To evaluate applications and make recommendations to the responsible Minister;
To monitor the transmission and operations of licensees.
To receive and investigate complaints;
To advise the government on policy;
To conduct and or commission research.


As a statutory body the ODPEM operates out of the Office of the Prime Minister with a Board of Management overseeing its activities.

The ODPEM has the unique role of being the only government agency to provide disaster management functions in Jamaica. Its operations are designed towards:

    Developing and implementing policies and programmes for the purpose of achieving and maintaining an appropriate state of national preparedness for natural disasters and other emergency events.
