This enchanting island, that was discovered 1494 of Christoph Kolumbus during his second America-trip, set in the Canarreos-Archipel, between Cuba and Mexico. It served over centuries as base for English and French pirates, who were after the Spanish Galeonens, that load richly, with gold and silver from South America to Europe did in Havanna stopovers and visited on this occasion at the treasure Island. Also Sir Francis Drake served it as pirate-basis in the 18th century.

Varadero is Cuba's tourist mecca and is the largest resorts complex in the Caribbean, national tourists started to coming here in 1872, but the international development didn't begin until 1930's when the US chemical millionaire Irenee Dupont Nemours built a large estate on the peninsula.  Diving with sharks is one of the main attractions in Gardens of the Queen. There are resident populations of “Caribbeans” and “Silkies”,in some spots is absolutely guaranteed to have more than 25 curious sharks swimming around during the dive, at least 6 different species can be seen: Very abundant: Caribbean, Nurse and Silky sharks, occasional: Lemon, Blacktip, Great and Scalloped Hammerhead and the amazing Whale Shark.

Cuba lies between the Atlantic to the North and the Caribbean to the South. It has traditionally been quieter than many Caribbean islands because of the difficulties of getting here from America. This may soon change.

There are many diving areas along Cuba's 5646 km of coast. The Isle of Youth (Isla de la Juventud), for example, is a marine reserve which is sheltered from the prevailing South East winds.
