Caribbean STAY

The Wallblake house is Anguilla’s only surviving plantation house.  Built in 1787 and fully restored in 2003, the Wallblake House is one of the few houses in the Caribbean where the entire complex of buildings including the kitchen, stable and workers’ quarters remain intact. Located in The Valley next to historic St. Gerard’s Roman Catholic Church, the Wallblake House is open for tours Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. Admission: $5.

Naturalists and animal lovers alike will welcome this unique and wonderous opportunity to spy on and potentially see the nesting and hatching of sea turtles in the wild.  From April through November, many of Anguilla’s beaches become the nesting grounds for leatherback, green and hawksbill turtles.  The best beaches for viewing the turtles are Maundays Bay, Meads Bay, Captains Bay and Limestone Bay.

A combination of the Manse and The Old Salt Factory and Pumphouse, this tour continues with a comprehensive look at the area including the ecology of the salt pond and bird watching, and an in depth look at the salt industry and how the ponds were harvested.  Proceeds from the tour go toward the work of The Anguilla Archaeological and Historical Society. $20 adults/children free.

The Heritage Collection is a museum that archives some of the island’s most important examples of our historical and cultural heritage. A unique collection of photographs, documents and artifacts span our  entire history from the Arawak Indians to present-day political campaign materials. The museum’s curator, Colville Petty, O.B.E., is Anguilla’s leading authority on all things pertaining to the history of our island home.

In a time before a tourism economy existed on Anguilla, salt mining was our main industry.  The Old Salt Factory and Pumphouse at Sandy Ground are a reminder of a time gone by.  The tour takes visitors through the Pumphouse and explains how the mining of the adjacent salt pond was carried out from both a mechanical and human viewpoint.  Photos illustrate how salt was picked from the pond flats, carried and stored for exportation.  Tours are given on Thursdays at 10 a.m. by appointment only.

Conchshell Envrionmental Tours offers professional tour guide services for historical tours, bird watching tours at the salt ponds, garden tours and art gallery tours.

Even though this is where we lived for a month back in 2002, I didn't pick it because I'm biased...

I put "funkiest" in quotes because that's what my dad calls it. I just think it's a cool place.

People from around the world dock their boats here when they visit.

And as you can see...

There are a heck of a lot of boats and people crowding this coolest of Anguilla beaches.

As a matter of fact, it's one big gigantic party!

Actually, it really is a big party...
