Havana Art Deco Tour

In the 1920 s and 1930 s the Art Deco style had impact in all areas of desing, including fashion, automobile grafic and interior desing. In Architecture, it was characterized by lavish ornamentation, geometric shapes, and the use of luxury and costly materials (marble, ivory, plated metals, glass, etc.), and concrete and steel structures.

It was during these decades, marked by the growing precence of the American monopolies on the island and the flooding of local moovie theaters with American films, that Deco was introduced in Cuba. The United States was not Cuba s only influence in this connection, however. In early years of the emerging Republic (1902), French culture competed with American fox-trot, jazz and cinema, which were gaining ground in a country politically and economically controlled by the United States.

It has been clearly establish that Art Deco architecture, and specially its distinctive hight buildings, were directly introduced in Cua from the United States. In adition to architecture, Deco also had an influence on local graphic arts and fashion.
