Caribbean STAY

WELCOME

Rain or shine, hurricane or heat, the Antigua Hash House Harriers must run on. You can sightsee, get some exercise, mix with people from a range of backgrounds and nationalities, which provides for interesting conversation, and a great social time all in one go.

A wonderful year-around fortnightly event for runners, joggers, walkers or even strollers, of all ages and fitness levels. Certainly a tremendous opportunity for those keen on photography, exploring remote areas of the island, adventure, and a lot of laughs.

Developed by expatriates in Malaysia in the 1930’s for fun and fellowship, this non-competitive exercise has spread to total over 1600 Hash Chapters around the world. The Antigua Hash House Harriers started in 1991 and at times attracts over 100 people. On Saturday afternoon, when the heat of the day has subsided, the ‘hashers’ meet at a previously planned rural venue, which could be anywhere on this beautiful island.

With two blasts of the hunting horn and a few words from the Hash Master, the two groups of hashers, runners and walkers, led by a leader and accompanied by the hare, gently move out in the quest to follow the correct five to seven mile trail through the countryside – and back to base! Designated hares will have already marked routes with flour for the hounds to follow. Some are the real paths and some are a hoax. The former is comfortingly confirmed with the sound of a horn and the call "ON-ON" is heard – everyone follows accordingly.

After an hour or so of enjoying all the sights and sounds enroute, the desire for quenching your thirst and staving off hunger pangs is satisfied and the afternoon ends with BYO food for the BBQ as well as the traditional hash bar. As darkness falls the lights are set up and plugged into the nearest 12v source.

The coolers are full of ice, beer, wine, and soft drinks start to dissipate in this most friendly scene, and the barbeque sizzles with your supper. A fabulous end to another great hash!
